Planning your first Hocking Hills trip
If you have never been, here is what nobody tells you before the first visit.

Where it is
The Hocking Hills sits in southeastern Ohio, around Logan. Columbus is about an hour away, Cincinnati roughly two and a half hours, and Cleveland roughly three. Pittsburgh and Indianapolis are both within a half day. For most of the Midwest this is a drive, not a flight, which is much of the appeal.
Which trails to do first
Hocking Hills State Park is not one trail but a series of separate gorges, each with its own parking area. For a first visit:
- Old Man's Cave. The signature hike, and the one to do first. Staircases cut into rock, a gorge floor, waterfalls at both ends. Busy for good reason.
- Cedar Falls. The highest-volume waterfall in the park, and a shorter walk.
- Ash Cave. An enormous recess cave with a mostly accessible paved approach. The easiest big payoff in the park.
- Rock House. The only true cave corridor in the park, and usually the quietest of the four.
Two of these fill a comfortable day. Four is a push.
How long to stay
Two nights is the common first trip and it works, but three is better. A weekend spent driving between trailheads is a different experience than one where you also have a morning with nothing scheduled.
What surprises people
- It is genuinely rural. Cell coverage is patchy, and the nearest full grocery store is in Logan. Bring what you need.
- Trailhead parking fills early on weekends, particularly in October. Staying close by is worth more than it sounds.
- The trails are wet. Sandstone gorges stay damp year-round. Boots with grip, not sneakers.
- October books a year ahead. If you want peak color on a weekend, plan much further out than feels reasonable.
Where to stay
Cabins in the woods are the point. Hotels here are on the highway, not in the hills. Look for a private hot tub, a fire pit, and a full kitchen, since restaurants are scattered and a drive. We are half a mile from Old Man's Cave, which on a Saturday morning in fall is the single most useful thing about us.
